Poverty isn't usually a common theme in novels anymore, as more societal problems are arising each day that the majority of the world's population can actually relate to. What many of us forget is that poverty affects people everyday. Poverty is very hard to get out of since it can just lead to more financial problems. I could only imagine not being able to afford everyday needs is scary, especially if you have children like the parents in this novel. Thankfully there are ways to help those who need it like shelters and food banks. Sylvie's family lived in a shelter. This book really sheds light on what those in need are dealing with emotionally and physically. Every family in this story was struggling financially for different reasons and it was easy to understand how they were feeling because the novel was in different perspectives.
